Peace Scholarship Program - Chile
For Chilean Students Pursuing an EFL Teaching
Degree
There will be up to 10 Peace
Scholarships available to Chilean students studying English
Teaching, to study in Australia for one semester beginning
in February 2009.
In order to apply for these scholarships,
students must already be accepted under the terms and conditions
established for the Semester Abroad Scholarship by the Chilean
Ministry of Education’s English Opens Doors Program. The English
Opens Doors Program covers living and travel expenses. Further
details about the Semester Abroad Scholarship for future EFL
teachers can be found in the English Opens Doors Program website:

An application to the Peace Scholarship Program
must be submitted along with the English Opens Doors Program
application.
Students who meet the eligibility criteria of
the English Opens Doors Program and the Peace Scholarship Program
criteria as provided below are invited to apply for the Peace
Scholarship.
Award
The Peace Scholarship Program for Chilean
English Teaching undergraduate students includes:
- Tuition fees for one semester of study at participating
Australian universities
- Two day orientation welcome program for all Peace Scholars in
Australia
- Other services and products offered by supporters of the Peace
Scholarship Program including IDP Education Pty Ltd where
available
- Lifetime networking opportunities with Peace Scholarship
recipients from countries all over the world
Chilean students selected for a Peace
Scholarship through the Chilean Ministry of Education’s English
Opens Doors Program will receive a monthly living allowance of
US$700 (equal to approximately AU$750). The Australian Department
of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs advises students require a
minimum of AU$1,000 per month, therefore students may need to
contribute some of their own funding towards their living costs
while in Australia.
In February 2009 there are up to 10
scholarships available to Chilean students to study at the
following Australian universities:
- Deakin University
- Edith Cowan University
- Griffith University
- La Trobe University
- Macquarie University
- Notre Dame University
- Queensland University of
Technology
- University of Western Sydney
How to Apply
Ensure you fulfil each of the selection
criteria of the Chilean Ministry of Education’s English Opens Doors
Program detailed at http://www.ingles.mineduc.cl/
(see Medidas Presidenciales, Number 26, scroll down Requisitos de
Postulación and Documentos requeridos) . You must submit an English
Opens Doors Program application form along with your Peace
Scholarship Program application form.
Ensure your application details all of your
academic and extracurricular achievements. Applications must be
typed and written in English.
Criteria for
Peace Scholarship Program for Chile , Semester 1 of
2009:
- You must be pursuing a degree majoring in EFL
Teaching at an accredited Chilean University and be in your
penultimate year of this degree program
- You must have achieved a grade point
average of 5.5/7 (or equivalent) in your degree to
date
- You can be granted credits for your study
abroad program in Australia which will go towards your degree at
your home institution in Chile
- You do not hold citizenship or permanent
residency in Australia and have not previously studied overseas,
either in Australia or elsewhere
- You are able to demonstrate a commitment to
‘global peace and understanding’ through community, academic or
professional achievements
- You are able to indicate how the experience
will further your professional development and help contribute to
global peace and understanding
- You are able to demonstrate a financial need
and that without this scholarship you would not have the chance to
study overseas
The following materials must be
received by 7th October 2008

printed and signed Application
Form
- Completed, printed and
signed Agreement of
Award Terms and Conditions
- Certified true copy of
current passport or official government identification
card
- Certified and English
translated true copy of official academic transcript, including
current year grades and explanation of grading system
- Original and current
certificate of either International English Language Testing System
(IELTS) - Academic test results, Computer Based TOEFL, Internet
Based TOEFL or Paper Based TOEFL (note: Institutional TOEFL or
general IELTS will not be accepted)
- Two
References/Testimonials in English
- Home
Institution Reference. This reference must follow the format
outlined on the Home
Institution Reference Form and address the criteria
requested
- Community
Leader Reference. This reference must be from someone you have
worked with on a particular community service project that you talk
about in your application (preferably your supervisor), or from
someone who can honestly discuss your involvement in community
based activities and projects and who has known you for more than 2
years. This reference/testimonial must follow the format outlined
on the Community
Leader Reference Form and address the criteria
requested.
Please note:
References cannot be submitted from a person to whom you are
related and references from any political party will not be
accepted.
Your application will not be assessed if you do
not fulfil all the selection criteria OR if you do not submit all
the required materials. No late applications will be accepted.

Selection Procedure
All applications must be received by 7th October 2008. Short-listed
applications will be sent to IDP Education Australia and the Peace
Scholarship Program in Australia for final selection and placement
at an Australian university.
