Peace Scholarship Program Student of the Year announced
The 2007 Peace Scholarship Program Student of the Year was
announced on Friday 4th May inMelbourne.
University of Western Sydney student, Gustavo Bastien from
Mexico was presented with a cheque for $800 at a cocktail party
held at Swinburne Universities brand new National Circus Centre in
Melbourne.
Fifty guests celebrated the achievements of this year’s Peace
Scholars, where the five finalists spoke about their experiences
while in Australia and how the Peace Scholarship Program has helped
them grow academically and personally.
While in Australia, Gustavo has been involved in many wonderful
activities and projects. He is a volunteer with the Sydney Peace
Foundation where he works on several projects including the role of
Manager of the Schools Peace Initiative. Gustavo is also involved
with the Sydney Children’s Hospital, the Red Cross, the United
Nations, and recently spent his summer volunteering in
Cambodia.
The four other finalists were Selene Diaz and Maria Barbosa both
from Mexico and studying at the University of Ballarat, Adiel
Paradiella from Indonesia who studied at the University of
Newcastle, and Monash student Patricia Palacios from Mexico.
The event was a great chance for students, IDP staff, and the
many supporters of the Peace Scholarship Program to gather and
celebrate the achievements of the Program, which is now in its
fourth year and has so far awarded scholarships to 167 students
from ten countries.
The Peace Scholarship program will soon welcome another intake
of approximately 50 students from Cambodia , Chile , Indonesia ,
India and Mexico .
